Synopsis: This film tells the story of the trajectory of Perry’s career as gospel singer Katheryn Hudson until the present day as pop singer and global superstar Katy Perry. Bearing testimony from Katy (real name Katheryn) about her childhood, talking about the Teenage Dream era, with scenes from backstage of her last world tour while trying to take time to resolve personal problems, including her divorce from British comedian Russell Brand. The interim scenes document her last world tour, the California Dreams Tour, and were recorded on November 23, 2011 at Staples Center, Los Angeles.
Verdict: 6.5/10 :) Yes, I know it's kinda high for a documentary about a singer's life, especially given that that singer has been around less than 10 years. But I loved the movie, and for me, it was actually quite motivational. There were a few parts that I liked, which was the way she changed her clothes onstage during her concert, also the scenes with her grandma :p Oh another genius scene was when they animated her fans all over the world tweeting to her about her breakup with Russell.
Perhaps they were milking it a little too much when chronicling her break up with Russel Brand, but for those romantics out there, it was a hole-in-one :p The scenes successfully managed to squeeze a few drops of tears from me, as I could totally relate to it. What I admired, was how strong she was, and how dedicated she was to her fans to not let them down.
Overall, some might say this is just an ordinary documentary about her life, and comparing her to the likes of Elvis and Michael Jackson or Madonna might be a bit too much, but I think, when someone achieves something like 5 Number One singles in one album, she deserves some respect too. I mean, how many songs are there in an ordinary album? 12? and having five of those songs on the number one list, that's like, almost 50% of the entire album in itself. So maybe she didn't revolutionise music like Elvis or the Beatles, but the Beatles or Elvis sure didn't have more than 5 singles on the number one list from one album either, so I would say, each is an achievement in their own right. It's all just a matter of respect.
